Anchorage, Alaska is a modern city with skyscrapers and a bustling international airport that sits on a stunning coastline amidst scenic mountains, lakes, rivers and glaciers. Anchorage is located in south-central Alaska, nestled between the Chugach Mountains to the east and the shoreline of the Cook Inlet to the west.

Anchorage started its growth in 1914 when Congress granted permission for a publicly owned railroad. Anchorage has grown steadily to become the business, cultural and distribution center of Alaska. Anchorage is bordered by the Cook Inlet on the West and the Chugach National Forest to the East. Anchorage is the hub of communication, transportation, health care, finance, and trade industries for the state. Known as the city of flowers, Anchorage's streets are lined with flower beds and hanging baskets, and wildflowers bloom in late summer and autumn. The first stop for many travelers to Alaska, Anchorage is surrounded by ski resorts, world-class fishing and nearly 20 state parks.

In Anchorage there are a total of 228 city maintained parks that are a total of 14,454 acres. Situated in an area of spectacular beauty, the opportunities in Anchorage for outdoor recreation are vast but the city also is home to a number of cultural institutions. Other places of interest include Portage Glacier, where huge ice blocks can be seen falling off the glacier's face into a lake below; Earthquake Park, where visitors can find depictions of the March 1964 earthquake that destroyed much of the city; and Eklutna Village Historical Park, with exhibits about the traditions and culture of the Native Americans and Russians who have lived in Anchorage for more than 350 years. Annual events include the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous, in February, commemorating the annual gathering in the past of trappers and miners, and the Anchorage to Nome Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, in March.
